Three more cases of Legionnaires’ Disease have been confirmed

Three more cases of Legionnaires’ Disease have been confirmed in an outbreak that has killed three British pensioners on holiday at a hotel in Spain.

One of the new cases was detected in Britain. The victim had just returned from a break at the four- star Hotel Diamante Beach in Calpe, near Benidorm.

The other two cases were registered by health authorities in France.

Three British pensioners on a package with Saga Holidays at the Diamante Beach died – two, aged 73 and 78, in January, and one aged 76 on February 2.

The latest cases brought the number affected in the outbreak to 18 – 12 from Britain, four Spaniards and two from France.

Three of the Spanish victims are hotel workers.

Two of the British holidaymakers, an 81-year-old woman and an 88-year-old man, are being treated at a Spanish hospital and are believed to be recovering well.

The Costa Blanca hotel was ordered to close its doors on Thursday.
