Activated Carbon

Effective Water Treatment Application

Activated carbon (or Activated Charcoal) effectively removes many chemicals and gases, certain microorganisms and organic chemicals in particular pesticides. In addition, it is used to improve water by removing disagreeable tastes and odours (deodorisation), including chlorine. Activated carbon is created from a variety of carbon-based materials, usually derived from charcoal, produced from carbonaceous source materials like, nutshells (coconuts), peat, wood, coir, lignite, coal and petroleum pitch.

Then the carbon is activated by subjecting it at a high temperature process that creates millions of microscopic pores. An amount of activated carbon provides acres of surface area. The pores trap microscopic particles and large organic molecules and activated surface areas adsorb, small organic molecules. Sufficient activation for useful applications come solely from the high surface area, though further chemical treatment often enhances the adsorbing properties of the material.

Types of Carbon Filters & Industrial Applications

There are two types of carbon filter systems, for water treatment granular activated carbon and solid block carbon. These two methods can also work along with a reverse osmosis system. Diffusion of the adsorbate is an important factor. These carbons are therefore preferred for all adsorption of gases and vapours as their rate of diffusion are faster.
