Private Water Supplies

Lakes, Lochs, Springs, Boreholes Fed, Rain Water Supplies

Aqua (Scotland) Ltd manufacture bespoke water treatment and collection systems for use in remote locations from springs, boreholes, and wells. These units are built from parts specific to customer requirements which may use much larger capacity for pipework components to allow various water demand levels. Potential uses for these systems for example are forestry worker facilities, hill top facilities, remote distilleries, remote estates, homes, business, manufacturing sites and any locations off the mains public water supply system where personnel are required to work, need sanitary and water supplies of a potable water quality.

Water Private Supplies - Collection and Treatment Systems

We conduct risk assessment, water sample tests and control. Based on findings we create a bespoke water treatment system to meet specific requirements to ensure production of quality water;

  • Concerns about the level of quality and purity of water
  • Concerns about the levels of microorganisms contaminants
  • Concerns about the levels of chemicals
  • Concerns about the levels of minerals
  • Concerns with seasonal changes in colour and content

Private Water Supplies Regulations (Scotland)

Private Water Supplies are regulated by local authorities using the Private Water Supply (Scotland) Regulations 2005 and the Water (Scotland) ACT 1980. The Private Water Supply (Scotland) Regulations 2005 update earlier regulations. The 2005 Regulations also incorporate the latest advice and knowledge from around the world about what is good and what is bad about drinking water quality. All private water supplies are required to be registered with the local authority where the source of the supply is located.

The Grant Scheme (£800) and How to Apply

Grants of up to £800 are available from the local authority to help you improve your private water supply. The Grant Scheme is non-means tested and you may be eligible for financial assistance if:

"your home or business is in Scotland and served by a private water supply; the private water supply is the main or sole source of water for human consumption purposes to these premises; and your private water supply is in need of improvement to bring it up to modern standards. Details about the application process are available from your local authority to whom completed forms should be returned."

"You should not start any of the improvement works before your application is approved by your local authority. Your local authority must agree that the expenditure is necessary. The cost of improving a private supply can vary hugely and there will be instances where the supply requires work which exceeds the £800 grant. In such cases it will be your responsibility to meet the additional costs. Your local authority can provide information and advice about the Grant Scheme."

Assistance with Grant Scheme Application

Aqua (Scotland) Ltd can provide a detailed estimate of the costs of your proposed improvement works. If you share your supply with a number of neighbouring premises you may wish to consider making a joint application. A joint application can be submitted in respect of all the premises served by the supply, by you and the other owners or occupiers acting together. In the majority of cases a joint approach is likely to provide the most effective long term solution to improve your water quality.
